📘 Standard Density Class Matrix

When shipping LTL, if you do not specify a class or write it incorrectly, carriers audit the cargo with a 3D scanner. If the scan calculates a lower density than listed, they automatically bump the class up and charge the difference plus an audit fee.

NMFC Class Density Table:

  • Over 50 lbs/cu ft (PCF) → Class 50 (Dense metals, engines)
  • 22.5 to 30 PCF → Class 70 (Heavy equipment)
  • 12 to 15 PCF → Class 100 (Boxed consumer electronics)
  • 6 to 8 PCF → Class 175 (Light furniture, servers)
  • Under 1 PCF → Class 500 (Ping pong balls, loose bags)
